High pollution levels are associated with an increased risk of heart attack
High levels of pollution may increase the risk of heart disease within six hours of exposure, according to articles published online in the British Medical Journal. However, the risk will not increase in six hours.
Given the nature of the temporary increase in risk, it is assumed that a heart attack will occur anyway and trigger completely within a few hours, which is known as the short-term elimination (or “harvest” effect of pollution.
An established study concludes that high levels of pollution are associated with premature death from heart disease, but the association with increased risk of heart disease is not clear, the authors said.
