Fresh air system VS air purifier

Fresh air system VS air purifier

In the past two years, there has been a product called the fresh air system on the market. However, the price of the fresh air system is much more expensive than the best air purifier for the living room. In the face of the threat of smog, is it the choice of best room size HEPA air purifier, or should we choose a fresh air system? What are the price/performance ratios of the two, and what are their respective advantages and characteristics?

Fresh air system is expensive

The fresh air system is a system in which fresh air is cleaned and sent into the room through a new air blower unit, pipes, and tuyères, and the indoor dirty air is discharged to the outdoor system. This ensures that the room has fresh air while filtering the smog.

This kind of fresh air system that can purify the air and bring fresh air to the room at the same time is not cheap. The reporter only saw this product in the mall, and the price is about 7,000 yuan.

On the mainstream shopping website, the general fresh air system products are priced at more than 10,000 yuan, and the cheapest is also around seven or eight thousand yuan.

However, on the shopping website, you can buy a good air purifier for only two or three thousand yuan. In comparison, the fresh air system is indeed expensive.

Fresh air system VS air purifier Who is better?

If calculated according to the price, the air purification capacity of the fresh air system should be much stronger than the air purifier, but is this really the case? To this end, the reporter is ready to do an experiment. In a room of about 60 square meters in an experience store of a fresh air system, the manufacturer installed a fresh air system according to strict standards. The reporter will use an air purifier to compare this new air system. In order to be able to understand the views of more consumers, this time invited 8 experiencers to participate in the experiment.

First, outdoor air quality was measured. The instrument showed that the current outdoor PM2.5 concentration was 101 μg/m3, and the indoor PM2.5 concentration was 72 μg/m3.

This 60 square meter room includes 8 experiencers, 2 reporters, and 1 engineer for a total of 11 people. Compared to the room size, there are already many people. At this time, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the room was 2000 ppm. According to national standards, this value is already in a state of pollution. When the concentration of carbon dioxide rises to 3,000 to 4,000 ppm, people may experience symptoms such as chest tightness and headache.

In this experiment, the reporter opened the air purifier and a fresh air system. The experimental time was 1 hour and was recorded every 15 minutes to observe changes in PM2.5 and carbon dioxide concentrations in the chamber. After the air purifier test is completed, the door will be opened to restore the indoor air to the initial state, and then the fresh air system will be turned on for the second round of testing.

After the test is completed, the experimental data tells us the truth:

In terms of PM2.5 purification capacity, after 1 hour of operation, the air purifier can reduce the indoor PM2.5 concentration from 72μg/m3 to 14μg/m3, the air quality is excellent, and the purification effect is very obvious.

After the fresh air system was turned on for 1 hour, the PM2.5 concentration in the house dropped from 72μg/m3 to 41μg/m3, and the air quality was only good. This shows that the fresh air system’s air purification capacity per unit time is far behind the air purifier.

In terms of oxygen content, after the fresh air system is turned on for one hour, the oxygen content of the indoor air is substantially the same as the oxygen content of a small-time when the air purifier is turned on.

However, tests have shown that the fresh air system has the advantages that air purifiers do not have in terms of ventilation. In the indicator of carbon dioxide concentration, we found that after the air purifier was turned on for one hour because 11 people in the room were active, the indoor carbon dioxide concentration actually increased from 2000ppm to 2900ppm, an increase of 900ppm.

After the opening of the fresh air system for 1 hour, 11 people in the room were also active, and the carbon dioxide concentration decreased slightly from 2000ppm to 1900ppm. Although there were many people in the room, the carbon dioxide concentration did not increase significantly.

Of course, some netizens may feel that such experiments lack professionalism and are not sufficient to produce accurate results. To this end, the reporter found Xu Zhaoyu, deputy director of the Building Energy and Environmental Testing Center of the China Academy of Building Research, and asked him to help compare the difference between the air purifier and the fresh air system.

The experiment will simulate the purification effect of the air purifier and the fresh air system when heavy pollution occurs in the consumer’s home. The experimental site is a model room of three rooms, two halls and two bathrooms of the Building Energy and Environmental Testing Center of China Academy of Building Research. The indoor area is 80.4 square meters. Xu Zhaoxuan used cigarettes as a source of pollution to raise the indoor PM2.5 concentration to 620 μg/m3. It is expected to test the purification effect of the air purifier and the fresh air system within one hour under the same conditions.

After 1 hour, the air purifier placed in the living room has reduced the PM2.5 concentration in the living room to 35 μg/m3.

However, through the instrument test, the PM2.5 concentration of the two bedrooms is still very high, the main bedroom is 230μg/m3, and the second bedroom is 120μg/m3, which is still in serious pollution. That is to say, this air purifier with a purifying area of 50 square meters can solve the problem of air purification in the living room wall, but the bedroom that exceeds its cleaned area is still seriously polluted by air.

Putting the fresh air system in the living room for 1 hour, what is the situation?

After testing by the instrument, after 1 hour, the PM2.5 concentration in all rooms including the living room and bedroom was 360μg/m3, which was still heavily polluted. Not only the living room is not as good as the air purifier, but even the pollution indicators of the two bedrooms are more serious than the air purifier.

Why is the fresh air system “not too powerful”?

Why is the fresh air system weaker than the air purifier in terms of purification capacity and speed? Ma Yuan, a professional engineer in the fresh air system, said that the difference in purification principles caused these differences.

The air purifier is purified by means of internal circulation adsorption filtration, which can directly contact the indoor air and filter the particulate matter like a sieve to generate clean air quickly and efficiently.

The fresh air system uses the external circulation to achieve purification, just like human breathing, sucking in clean air and then discharging the dirty air inside. Therefore, if the indoor air is completely cleaned, it needs to be completely ventilated once, and the purification speed must be slower.

However, because the fresh air system has a ventilation function and continuously transports air from an outdoor source, it will suppress the rise of carbon dioxide, and even if the person expects to be in a relatively closed environment, it will not feel depressed.

Buy a new style, choose the right type.

After years of popularization, people have a relatively good understanding of air purifiers, but many people still do not understand the fresh air system. How to choose the more popular fresh air system on the market? What are the advantages and disadvantages of different types?

The advantages of the ceiling-type fresh air system are stable quality, low maintenance costs, excellent accessory quality, and low noise. However, the ceiling type can only be installed before the decoration. If the home decoration is completed, it may affect the appearance of the house.

The wall-mounted fresh air system can be operated as an air conditioner without being affected by the decoration. However, the ventilation area of the wall-mounted fresh air system is relatively small.

The electrostatic precipitator’s fresh air system has a strong effect on the purification of pollutants, and the noise is relatively low. However, the power consumption is relatively large and a small amount of ozone is generated.

Conclusion: Both have their own characteristics

After comparison tests, the following conclusions may provide you with a reference:

Air purifiers are cheaper and can purify indoor air quickly, but they have limitations in use, are more suitable for individual rooms, and cannot suppress the rise of carbon dioxide in the room.

The fresh air system can comprehensively improve the indoor air environment and transport fresh air into the room, but the purification speed is relatively slow, the price is relatively expensive, and the installation and maintenance are more complicated. The fresh air system using electrostatic precipitator technology will produce ozone. If the ozone index is too high, it will also cause harm to human health.
